On this release, King comes close to equaling his past triumphs on small independent labels in the '50s and '60s. He's ditched the psuedo-hip production fodder and cut a 12-song set matching him with blues peers. His duets with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins are especially worthy, while the songs with Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas have some good-natured banter and exchanges, as well as tasty vocals. The master gives willing pupils Joe Louis Walker and Robert Cray valuable lessons on their collaborations. There's also a medley in which King invokes the spirit of his chitlin circuit days, taking the vocal spotlight while his Orchestra roars along underneath.

By 1967, King had refined his singing and guitar style (which were always intertwined) to a fine point. What was just beginning to emerge during this period was King the showman, the singer with a story to tell his audience; sometimes a sad story, sometimes an angry one, occasionally even a downright mean one. Nowhere was this more apparent than in live performance. Here he's captured in concert in Chicago, home of the blues and the ideal place to testify to the congregation. From "Tired of Your Jive" to "I Know What You're Puttin' Down" to the unequivocal "Baby Get Lost," B.B. lets his audience in on the ups and downs of romance in no uncertain terms, both through his impassioned vocals and characteristically stinging guitar. The effect is both cathartic and awe-inspiring.

This isn't his most well-known stuff, but it's a very solid late '60s set. Featuring brassy arrangements by Johnny Pate (who also worked with many prominent Chicago soul acts during the '60s), it presents King's sound at its fullest without sacrificing any of his grit or sophisticated swing…

Blues On The Bayou is a 1998 studio recording by B. B. King. In the CD liner notes, B.B. King writes: "Of the many records Lucille and I have had the pleasure of recording over the years, this one is especially close to my heart. It's also one of the most relaxed and, for me, most satisfying… No one was telling us what to do. No one needed to tell us what to do." He adds that he considers the band playing on this album as his best ever and that he got to the studio with the idea of keeping the music simple ("I've felt the urge to go back to basics."). With this state of mind, the record was cut in four days: "Found some old B. B. King songs. Wrote some new ones… All live, all real. No overdubs, no high-tech tricks. Just basic blues." The album won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

This is B.B. King's most delightful recording of the '90s. He duets with other blues greats, including Koko Taylor ("Something You Got"), Buddy Guy ("I Pity the Fool"), Etta James ("There's Something on Your Mind"), Ruth Brown ("You're the Boss"), and his dear friend John Lee Hooker ("You Shook Me"). The peaks come in his guitar shootout with Texas Telecaster slinger Albert Collins on "Call It Stormy Monday" and his high-spirited run-in with Katie Webster, who steals their performance of "Since I Met You Baby" with her saucy asides.

B.B. King gets no better than when he performs with the people he genuinely loves. This CD was my adult re-education in the Blues and I could not have done better. Whether it's Saturday morning baking or Sunday morning watering of the plants, I can't get it done without being on the Summit with B. B. and his great friends, Koko Taylor, Etta James and John Lee Hooker. This is the music that you makes you so deeply happy that you love music. It makes me love my friends as well. At the age of 4, my Granddaughter has made B. B. one of her friends and I will never worry that along with all the other genres she will always include Blues having fallen in love with B. B. and his Friends. This CD provides the juice for my personal cabaret.

B.B. King is not only a timeless singer and guitarist, he's also a natural-born entertainer, and on Live at the Regal the listener is treated to an exhibition of all three of his talents. Over percolating horn hits and rolling shuffles, King treats an enthusiastic audience (at some points, they shriek after he delivers each line) to a collection of some of his greatest hits…

Embracing the white college market like so many of his contemporaries Memphis Slim stepping into the international market and became a very famous ambassador for the blues around the world. This 25 track set is littered with hits and classic songs including "Messin' Around", "Frisco Bay", "Blue And Lonesome", "Help Me Some", "Angel Child", "Mother Earth" and "The Comeback". Also featured here is "Nobody Loves Me" and although not a hit for Memphis, it went on to be recorded by Lowell Fulson and B.B. King as "Every Day I Have The Blues" eventually becoming a hit and a blues standard. This modest selection of titles from the vast recorded legacy of Memphis Slim presents a vivid picture of the career path he followed from the juke joints of the South to the sophisticated bars of Paris, France and is a must for blues fans.
